The differences between the First and the City

Both designed in the early 2000s by Nicolas Ghesquière, the Balenciaga First and the City embody THE It-bags of their time. Seen on the arms of Kate Moss or the Olsen sisters, these bags are a safe bet, the timeless companion that will follow you on all your adventures!

Although very similar in appearance, there are still some differences to note.
First of all, the City has a much larger capacity than the First. It is perfect as a school bag, if you want to fit a computer in it, while the First has a smaller capacity, which makes it more of a small handbag ideal for your outings.

In addition, the City can be carried by hand, on the shoulder, as well as around the body, crossbody. The First, due to its smaller size, can only be carried by hand and on the shoulder!

A unique vintage heritage

Louis Vuitton bags, symbols of refinement and quality, experienced a unique period of manufacturing in collaboration with The French Company between the 1970s and 1990s. This association, sometimes unknown to the general public, gave birth to distinctive pieces coveted by collectors.

A strategic partnership for the House

In the 1970s, to meet growing demand in the American market while circumventing heavy import duties, Louis Vuitton formed a partnership with The French Company, an American manufacturer of luggage and leather goods. This alliance allowed the House to expand its presence in the United States by locally producing bags and accessories from its iconic range.

Similar pieces, but unique thanks to their details

Unlike traditional Louis Vuitton bags made in France, those made by The French Company often feature variations in materials and manufacturing methods. For example, some models feature zippers Heel instead of zips Flash usually used by Louis Vuitton. Additionally, bags from this period may feature vinyl details, while bags made in France use untreated cowhide leather. Louis Vuitton bags produced by The French Company are also distinguished by their specific stamping and markings. One of the distinguishing features is the absence of serial numbers, which contrasts with contemporary Louis Vuitton bags that all bear a serial number. Instead, these bags often bear a label stating " The French Company under license to Louis Vuitton » or gold lettering markings inside the bags.

The use of less common rivets and metal parts as well as the absence of monograms in certain places add to the uniqueness of these pieces.

These peculiarities have sparked debate among collectors and experts, with some seeing these differences as signs of inferior quality, while others see them as proof of authenticity and unique historical value.

This collaboration lasted until the early 1990s, marking a specific era in Louis Vuitton's history. While these pieces may be perceived as atypical, they represent a shrewd business strategy and a creative adaptation to an expanding market.

And today?

Today, The French Company bags have become sought-after collectibles, prized for their authenticity and unique history. They constitute a unique and fascinating part of the Louis Vuitton heritage.

Céline: a story of French luxury

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard decided to open a store selling custom-made children's shoes in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. This is how the eponymous brand was born. Celine. At the time, the latter was recognizable by its very particular logo: a red elephant drawn by the caricaturist Raymont Peynet whose miniatures were distributed as toys in stores. The brand was so successful that it opened three new stores a few years later.

An unexpected inspiration: The accident that shaped the identity of the House

In 1960, Celine gradually moved towards women's fashion, starting with the design of adult shoe models, then leather goods accessories, including gloves and bags. Ready-to-wear also made its appearance with the creation of pieces that were both elegant and functional.

In 1973, during a minor car accident on Place de l'Étoile, Céline Vipiana turned her attention to the cast iron chains that encircle the Arc de Triomphe. The links of these chains intertwine and thus form a double " C " It is a revelation. These simple links embody the very essence of Celine. After asking the President of the Republic for his permission, the designer decided to make it the House's logo and signature motif. It can then be found as a monogram on the canvas of the Bucket bag, or as a clasp on the iconic Triomphe bag.

A shaken artistic heritage

From its creation to today, Celine continues to seduce thanks to the timeless elegance of its collections. A true example of French luxury. After the death of its founder, many artistic directors have succeeded her. From Michael Kors to Phoebe Philo, they perpetuate the legacy left by Céline Vipiana through refined creations. Under the direction of Hedi Slimane since 2018, Celine takes a new turn. A wind of sophistication blows over this House with its minimalist imprint.

Looking back at the creation of the Jackie

Have you ever wondered about the history of the iconic Gucci Jackie bag? Let's take a look at the creation and evolution of this timeless accessory.

The origin of the Jackie bag

The Gucci Jackie bag, originally known as "Constance", was first launched in the 1950s. It quickly became a favorite of fashion icons and celebrities for its understated elegance and quality craftsmanship.

Of the Jackie Kennedy style, we mainly remember the First Lady suits and, later, her namesake Gucci bag, in honor of her loyalty.

A bet on the redesign

In 2009, Gucci decided to give the classic Jackie bag a modern touch. The new design features a more elegant silhouette, more modern materials and a more contemporary look, while keeping the essence of the original model.

A popularity that keeps growing

Over the years, the Gucci Jackie bag has remained a symbol of sophistication and style. Its timeless appeal has made it a wardrobe must-have for fashion lovers around the world.

Fun fact: Barbra Streisand, Peter Sellers, Samuel Beckett… In the 1970s, everyone was fighting over the Jackie, designed as a unisex accessory very much of its time.

The legacy

Today, the Gucci Jackie bag remains a coveted accessory, embodying the brand's heritage and its commitment to quality. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless design and lasting appeal.
