The 1947, an icon born of innovation
The Gucci Bamboo 1947 is one of the most iconic bags in the history of luxury leather goods. Created in 1947, in the aftermath of World War II, it was born of a constraint that became a symbol of innovation.

The innovative Bamboo.
Faced with a shortage of leather and metal in Italy, Gucci's artisans turned to a material as unexpected as it was refined: bamboo, imported from Japan. Heated over a flame and then bent by hand, it became a unique handle that would earn the house of Gucci its place in design history.
To this day, each bamboo handle requires exceptional craftsmanship. The bamboo is heated, bent, lacquered and polished by hand, making every bag slightly different. More than 75 years after its creation, this technique remains one of the most recognizable signatures of the house of Gucci.
Over the decades, the Bamboo has been carried by many famous figures, from Ingrid Bergman to Elizabeth Taylor, before being reinterpreted by the house's successive creative directors, from Tom Ford to Alessandro Michele, without ever losing its identity.
