Born almost by accident, rejected then embraced, it is today one of the most powerful symbols of 2000s fashion. A bag that embodies attitude, freedom and a deliberately nonchalant elegance.
The icon of the 2000s.
In the early 2000s, the house of Balenciaga set out to break away from the structured, rigid bags that dominated the market at the time. Under the creative direction of Nicolas Ghesquière, a prototype was born: a bag in soft, crinkled, almost raw leather, with no visible logo, adorned with metal studs and zipper tassels.
At the time, the brand's management had doubts. The design was deemed too casual, too far removed from the codes of classic luxury. Production was nearly cancelled.
Everything changed when Kate Moss and several models received the bag ahead of its release. Carried every day and photographed on the street, it immediately caught the attention of the press and the public.
Faced with this spontaneous demand, Balenciaga finally decided to launch the bag in stores under the name “Motorcycle City Bag”, quickly shortened to City. It was an instant success.
