Meet Céline - Chronicle on luxury houses...

Céline: a story of French luxury

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard decided to open a store selling custom-made children's shoes in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. This is how the eponymous brand was born. Celine. At the time, the latter was recognizable by its very particular logo: a red elephant drawn by the caricaturist Raymont Peynet whose miniatures were distributed as toys in stores. The brand was so successful that it opened three new stores a few years later.

An unexpected inspiration: The accident that shaped the identity of the House

In 1960, Celine gradually moved towards women's fashion, starting with the design of adult shoe models, then leather goods accessories, including gloves and bags. Ready-to-wear also made its appearance with the creation of pieces that were both elegant and functional.

In 1973, during a minor car accident on Place de l'Étoile, Céline Vipiana turned her attention to the cast iron chains that encircle the Arc de Triomphe. The links of these chains intertwine and thus form a double " C " It is a revelation. These simple links embody the very essence of Celine. After asking the President of the Republic for his permission, the designer decided to make it the House's logo and signature motif. It can then be found as a monogram on the canvas of the Bucket bag, or as a clasp on the iconic Triomphe bag.

A shaken artistic heritage

From its creation to today, Celine continues to seduce thanks to the timeless elegance of its collections. A true example of French luxury. After the death of its founder, many artistic directors have succeeded her. From Michael Kors to Phoebe Philo, they perpetuate the legacy left by Céline Vipiana through refined creations. Under the direction of Hedi Slimane since 2018, Celine takes a new turn. A wind of sophistication blows over this House with its minimalist imprint.
