The Kelly Vinyl: A transparent icon of fashion history
The Kelly Vinyle by Hermès is more than just a bag: it is a work of art, a symbol of innovation in the world of fashion. This transparent bag, with its bold design and ingenious functionality, tells a story rich in style and exclusivity, while paying homage to a defining moment in contemporary history.
A unique origin
Created in 1996 for the spring-summer fashion show ofHermes, the Vinyl Kelly was born in a particular context. After the tragic attacks of 1995 in Paris, security measures were reinforced, especially during prestigious events. Hermès then imagined an elegant solution for its VIP guests: a transparent bag, which allowed to pass through security checks while displaying a chic and bold design.
The Vinyl Kelly had the words " Kelly Transparent Special for Security Control! » in French and « See Through Kelly A Special for Security Bag Checks! » in English, written directly on its surface. This first model, measuring 32 cm, also bore the inscription « Hermès Summer Collection 1996 » on the front.
Although originally conceived as an exclusive invitation, it instantly became an iconic piece, attracting attention far beyond the catwalks.
The art of transparent vinyl
Unlike the sumptuous leathers that usually define Hermes, the Vinyl Kelly is distinguished by its transparent material and unique shine. Available in an iconic bright orange, this bag offered a completely new approach to fashion. Its spacious and visible interior transformed everyday objects into aesthetic elements, adding a personal and artistic touch to every outfit.
A worldwide success
The success of the transparent Kelly did not stop at the 1996 fashion show. Between 1997 and 1999, during Hermès' traveling exhibition in Japan, entitled " A trip to wonderland ", new versions of the Kelly in Vinyl were offered for sale. These models, produced in limited edition, bore the inscription " Souvenir of the Exhibition {…} » with the specific year of release and a poetic message on their underside: a journey to wonderland.
Of these variations, the introduction of the Kelly in orange vinyl in 1998 was particularly memorable. Today, these bags, rarely available outside of Japan, are treasures coveted by collectors around the world.
A lasting influence in the fashion industry
The Vinyl Kelly not only made history at Hermès, it also paved the way for a global trend. Its innovative concept inspired many designers to explore the world of transparent vinyl bags, an aesthetic that continues to seduce fashion enthusiasts.
The Kelly en Vinyle represents a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. Through this bag, Hermès has once again proven its ability to innovate while respecting its heritage. Whether for its fascinating history, its visionary design or its exclusivity, the Kelly en Vinyle remains an essential icon and a dream for fashion lovers and collectors.
